How can a change in medium affect the story being told?

An Introduction

My relationship with art goes back as far as the moment I was able to pick up a pencil, yet did not move past this form of 2D expression until I was an adult. I spent my high school years practicing to master the art of realism, only to realize it had left me with a painfully limiting ability to express myself. In an attempt to regain my love for art I experimented with new materials in the years following high school graduation, slowly regaining my confidence. In this search for artistic motivation I also came to quickly realize that spending decades working towards the sole goal of being able to reproduce and the likeness of an image in pencil had left me without any inspiration. Working with new materials over the past few years has helped me regain the confidence to make art beyond this mindless replication.

For this semester-long research project, I want to push myself to explore new and more unconventional forms of expression in an attempt to close the gap between my sense of self and my work. In my personal experience, using new materials yields the most honest representation of my state. Without the muscle memory or pre existing framework of expectations, a new medium provides a canvas for a raw exploration. Revisiting common materials, such as pencil drawings for example, has also allowed me to rewrite my relationship with art by becoming familiar with looser and more expressive mark making techniques. I hope to shift focus away from creating a beautiful product and instead explore my relationship with the materials in the moment.
